Train your mind with this digital Japanese soroban; a solar powered calculator and time piece within one sleek credit card sized case.

Made of wood with a touch sensitive panel, there are two modes; calculator mode – use the touch screen like a soroban – this classic style of calculation will develop your mind and improve your calculation skills! 1-4 units in each column of the bottom section, +5 units in each column of the top section. The beads will automatically show the time in the same manner when you switch to time mode.

  1. Nice concept. Hope it comes with an instructional video in English though. Never used a Soroban before. A nice alternative to the traditional calculator.

  2. It’s definitely fun and once you have invested the time in understanding it, i’m sure it would be easy to use. Yeah, nice idea NorthWind, a puzzle mode would be good – you know like Sudoku or something – would be handy to play on the train commute to work, hehe.

  3. This device on first view seems hard but if you observe carefully, it is read as follows.

    Calculator:

    Top Panel: +5 only if the dot is down.
    Bottom panel: add the dots only if it is up.

    Time:

    Same as the calculator mode only that there are these 2 dots to represent the 2 dots in a time, example 7:42.

    However since the design is to be like a credit card, I do hope that Tokyoflash can make sure that this card is durable if it is placed in a wallet. I mean my own credit card is a bit bend already.

  4. Wow! This is a super cool concept of having a calculator in the form of a soroban, otherwise called an abacus, with the time, powered by the idea of solar cells, all within a tiny package of a credit card!

    Whoever came up with this, surely deserves great ‘credit’ :)

    Even as it is impressive, i would suggest the inclusion of a date function as well as to fully utilize its touch sensitivity by adding on some simple game mode. Where dots will appear randomly and consecutively and the user will have to put his/her reflexes to the test by quickly tapping as many dots as possible before he first misses. And the highest score, as well as the score of the last game will be displayed in the same way a calculation is.
