Decypher watch turns digits into code.

Design submitted by Lloyd from Australia.

Lloyd says: This watch design is called “Decypher”. The display may look mysterious at first, but is actually very easy to decipher once you know the trick behind it.

Decypher has both a time and date mode. To see the digits in either mode, all you have to do is ignore the triangles and you’ll see that the remaining lines form digits. A cool feature of the display is that every digit, apart from the 8, can be displayed in more than one way by simply displaying different combinations of triangles. There is an explanatory diagram below.

This watch is USB rechargeable via a computer and the band is made from a man-made material that is animal friendly. The watch comes with a choice of several different coloured bands and the display is available in different colours too.

I feel this design would appeal to puzzle, game and sci-fi lovers in particular. It would also suit geeks and anyone who likes quirky modern things as well as thinking “outside the box”.

This design stands out because of its unique and original cryptic display which is also modern-looking and very simple to read. The fact that the same digit can be displayed in different ways also makes the display more interesting.

  1. Nice design! It would’ve been nicer if there was something in the background like some more lines or whatever because it kind of looks plain to me :S

  2. I love the idea behind the encryption of the digits – I find it perfectly easy enough to decipher, which makes it a very good read-at-a-few-second-glance display. I agree with Richard, though, that there is too much empty space around the digits…but that should be easy to fix. I like your color choices. 😀 5*

    • Thanx Heather! I remember thinking the same thing about the space around the shapes after I’d finished creating the images. But by that time I really wanted to get on with another design and I thought it didn’t look too bad. Anyway, it’s just a concept design. I tried to make the design appeal to both sexes.

  3. At first I was like “Fuck that, that’s retarded.”

Then I looked at how you decipher it and it blew my mind. I applaud you.

    • Thanx Diane. 🙂 I think the White Rabbit would definitely appreciate this design. Sorry I didn’t do a pink one. But I’m sure TF could do it in that colour.

  5. Simple criptic numbers, simple clean case.
The proportions could be tweaked a little as previous people have commented but that is a minor detail.

  6. The reading time is hermethic at the beginning and the solution is very simple.
5* for the originality of the reading, for the look of the watch, it’s a bit too simple for my taste.

  7. Thanx Patrick! I’m glad you like the encrypted digits. Sorry you weren’t so keen on the styling of the watch, but I didn’t want to overpower the encrypted numbers, which is what it’s all about. Anyway, I’m sure if TF ever decided to make this one they could easily improve that aspect of it.
