Bonsai LCD watch grows time in miniature.

Design submitted by Lloyd from Australia.

Lloyd says: I thought it would be kind of cool to use a bonsai tree for a watch display and this LCD concept watch design called “Bonsai” is the result.

It’s very simple to read. In time mode the hours and minutes are indicated by 4 digits that are formed by the bonsai’s leaves and the seconds are simply displayed as regular digits on the tree’s pot. In date mode the day, month and year can be read in the same way.

There’s a fun animation which you can play immediately by touching a button or set to play automatically at regular intervals. It depicts water drops falling onto a leafless bonsai, causing its leaves to sprout and reveal the time.

The bonsai’s trunk and branches are silk-screened onto the back of the watch’s lens/glass.

This watch has an alarm mode and is USB rechargeable via a computer. It also has an EL backlight which makes the display easier to read at night. The watch’s case and strap are made from stainless steel and are shown in either black or silver, but other colours are possible too. The LCD display is also shown in different colours and is “always on”.

This design would probably appeal to anyone who loves quirky modern gadgets, bonsai trees, nature, plants, puzzles, art, creativity and thinking “outside the box”.

It stands out because of its enchanting and easy-to-read display that will definitely grow on you.

  3. Nice idea Lloyd, well realized! I’ve been toying with some half-baked ideas for organic-looking designs for a good while now, but I’ve not come up with anything this clean and clear. Good work sir! =)

  4. Great concept, very clever use of natural inspiration. At first I thought I could take or leave it, but it’s really grown on me! Hopefully others will take a leaf out of my book and give it 5/Y! I wood definately consider buying this as a gift! I imagine you basic layout could also be used with other imagery too. Wood be awesome if it was solar powered, it wood really work with the theme. Best of luck Lloyd! :D

  5. I really like the concept. I think it is very suggestive
The only thing that bothers me a bit is the location of seconds ….
Maybe you could use seasonal elements like water, snow, rain
leaves, flowers, to generate the number of seconds in a plane behind the figure of bonsai (just a suggestion).
    Congrats and good luck Lloyd! 5 * / Y. :)

    1. Thanx for all your suggestions Jose and your interest. ;) I thought about doing the seconds in a Japanese style font so they just looked like decoration on the pot (like the one I used to create the design’s name on each image). I also considered using fallen leaves to create them. In the end, however, I just went for a simple font so that it would be easy to read. I also thought that the seconds could be turned off too.

  9. At the beginning, I didn’t like it. However, the animation made me change my mind. I also like the seconds display part. I like the one with the black background.
